A Ripple Conversation With Esben Willems Of Monolord

Can you define the bands vision when you're creating music?

Esben Willems: Our vision is to always keep exploring our band sound and always aim at making the next live show or the next album better than the previous one.

Tell me about your live shows! Do you have any rituals before you go on stage?

EW: Since we're all vegetarians we don't sacrifice baby goats, we're also atheists and don't believe in supernatural beings to summon, so we're having difficulties finding a fitting ritual to perform. But for the time being, black coffee and talking backwards in a dimly lit room will do.

How has the band progressed as a live act since its first live-performance?

EW: I think that's more a question to our audience, how they experience a live show compared to the first time they saw us. For us, it's being a more tight knit unit, we have developed a mutual understanding, you know when you can read each other's minds almost, you know what your band mates are doing next without having to communicate that, it's implied. Hard to explain, but that feeling is just amazing. When the band is one collective unit.

Any specific memorable concerts so far?

EW: I love those intimate and intense shows, when the venue is packed, the audience is up close and the air is vibrating from the heat. For me, that's the pure essence of a live show; you're one with the audience.

How do you translate the record into a liveshow?

EW: We always record with the feeling of the live sound as a reference, so there really is not much of any adaptation. Before tours we rehearse until the songs are in our backbones, from there's it's just go.

Could you imagine when you started the band that you would be a well respected band with many tours overseas and a constant growing fanbase?

EW: No.

Have you met any reaction on your latest effort ”Rust”?

EW: The response from our fans have been overwhelming, on top of that we've been getting great reviews, a massive stream of superlatives, almost hard to comprehend.

Did you notice any change in the way people react if you compare it to your other records?

EW: Only that many seems to like the minor difference in sound, like the addition of other instruments here and there.

You record your own records!  Bad or Negative? Both?
EW: There is always positive and negative sides to everything. But the bonuses with recording yourself is that you can use your time just as you please, you're not limited to a specific time frame in which you need to deliver your absolute best, and then some. That pressure can sometimes kill the joy and inspiration, so at least we don't have to deal with that aspect of the process.

When writing for a new record. Can describe the process? What comes first ? Are you a jamming band or do you have it all clear when entering the studio?

EW: There's no specific formula or set process. We always work on new music, in several kinds of ways, so when it's approaching album recording time we start with narrowing the current ideas down to the material we feel is would make an album we can be proud of.

What’s the ingredient when you're crafting the massive record sound of yours?

EW: It seems like there's a perpetual search for the holy grail of sound, but the harsh reality is that there is no magic ingredient. Hard work and open ears is all you need.

You seem to be a band who write about what's going on in the world. Do you get any comments about not writing the usual doom-lyrics?

EW: Yes.

Do you have any favorite child on the new record?

EW: If by child you mean song, every song is our favorite. We wouldn't have recorded them otherwise.

What song makes the audience go bananas?

EW: Whenever any cover band plays Bon Jovi's ”You Give Love a Bad Name”. I still don't get that.

Whats the reason behind the success of so many Scandinavian bands?

EW: Garlic, coffee, the polar bears roaming every street in every town, atheism and the resistance against the royal family.

When recording Rust you used several different instruments such as strings and organ and especially the violin in “Wormland”. I think the violin picks up the octave from the guitar and rides the song out. Is this a direction you will explore even more on the upcoming records?

EW: We don't make decisions like that, we go with the flow of the songs and what we think the feel of them are, so if we feel the addition of a specific instrument will get us there we'll add that, if not we won't.

What gear are you using when recording?

EW: Basic gear, the sound is not in the gear, it's in how you use it.

What’s up for the rest of 2017 in the catacombs of Monolord?

EW: We're on tour with Conan at the moment, covering most of Europe. Great fun! After that, we only have one more show this year, the mini festival Vintersabbat in Oslo.

Throbbing Gristle: 40th Anniversary Event at Rough Trade NYC

Photo: Throbbing Gristle

Mute and Rough Trade are pleased to announce a special Q&A and signing with Genesis Breyer P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle at Rough Trade NYC on November 24. Moderating the discussion will be T. Cole Rachel of The Creative Independent. The Brooklyn event follows a similar occasion held earlier this month at Rough Trade East in London with Throbbing Gristle’s Cosey Fanni Tutti and Chris Carter. Further information regarding the Brooklyn Q&A and signing is available here.

The Rough Trade event coincides with the first in a series of reissues on Mute, starting with the 40th anniversary of their debut album release, The Second Annual Report.

On November 24, The Second Annual Report, presented as a limited edition white vinyl release in the original packaging and also on double CD, and 20 Jazz Funk Greats, on green vinyl and double CD, will be released along with, The Taste Of TG: A Beginner’s Guide to Throbbing Gristle with an updated track listing that will include “Almost A Kiss” (from 2007’s Part Two: Endless Not). This will be the first time The Taste Of TG has been available on vinyl and will be presented on double red vinyl alongside a CD and digital release. For those not attending the Rough Trade event, stream and order the reissues via the links below.

The Second Annual Report, the first album from Throbbing Gristle, came out originally on November 4, 1977 and launched the career of one of the most politically and sonically antagonistic bands of all time.

Throbbing Gristle are Chris Carter, Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (who sadly passed away on November 25, 2010), Cosey Fanni Tutti and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Their impact on music, culture and the arts is immeasurable and still felt today.

November’s anniversary releases will be followed by further catalog releases in 2018.

TBC 2018
D.o.A. The Third And Final Report
Heathen Earth
Part Two: Endless Not
Mission Of Dead Souls

2017 saw Throbbing Gristle’s catalog available on streaming services for the first time. Mute and Throbbing Gristle will continue the reissues series, creating previously unreleased box sets and making available long out-of-print and important pieces of work.

BLACK WIZARD: Heavy Metal/Stoner Rock Collective To Release Livin' Oblivion Full-Length This February Via Listenable Records; Artwork And Track Listing Revealed

Canadian heavy metal/stoner rock collective BLACK WIZARD will release their brand new full-length Livin' Oblivion this February via France's Listenable Records. Their second release on Listenable and fourth album overall was produced and engineered by Michael Kraushaar in Vancouver, BC, and comes sheathed in the cover art of renowned Berlin, Germany-based illustrator Eliran Kantor (Testament, Crowbar, Satan).

Livin' Oblivion centers itself on the obliteration or slow decay of one's self, morals, and life as we know it. "We are living in an age where the powers of the World are taking steps backwards and moving away from a positive future," the band elaborates. "There is a large number of disenfranchised youth and young adults that would rather live their lives in oblivion -- drinking, drugs, partying etc. -- than chasing any kind of future or dreams, simply because the rest of the world seems to be falling apart around them."

Further info on BLACK WIZARD's Livin' Oblivion, including final release date, teaser tracks, and preorders, to be released in the coming weeks. Stand by.

Livin' Oblivion Track Listing:
1. Two Of These Nights
2. Feast Or Famine
3. James Wolfe
4. Livin Oblivion
5. Cascadia
6. Portraits
7. Poisoned Again
8. Heavy Love
9. Eternal Illusion

Hailing from Vancouver, BC, BLACK WIZARD was forged in 2009 between high-school friends. Some years and personnel changes later, the band is going stronger than ever. Founding members vocalist/guitarist Adam Grant and drummer Eugene Parkomenko were both working underwhelming construction jobs at the time, passing the days to the sounds of Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Witch, and Electric Wizard. Today Parkomenko and Grant are accompanied by guitarist Danny Stokes and basisst Evan Joel. Having followed a true DIY aesthetic, the band has released three full-length LPs along with a 7" single independently and sold over five thousand copies worldwide. In classic WIZ fashion, Livin' Oblivion has evolved from their previous efforts boasting a bigger, heavier, sharper, and louder approach than ever before. Faster thrash elements have been added, while staying true to that sultry, Thin Lizzy-esque twin lead vibe throughout.

Since their first Listenable album release, New Waste, in early 2016, the band has toured non-stop including a Canadian mini-tour with Red Fang, a six-week stadium tour with Killswitch Engage and Volbeat, a month-long US tour supporting Brant Bjork and Royal Thunder, a month-long North American tour supporting Weedeater, and so much more. At home on the road, BLACK WIZARD is ready to take to the streets again kicking 2018 off with their fourth European run.

Adam Grant - vocals/guitar
Eugene Parkomenko - drums
Danny Stokes - guitar
Evan Joel - bass

This progressive rock trio from Cincinnati, OH features Karis Tucker (voice), André Machado (8-string guitar, bass), and Henry Conde (synth, piano). Guest musicians include Julio Oliveira on drums, Ander Peterson on saxophone, Soojin Kim on piano, and with lyrics by Diogo Oliveria. With 2016 being the official start to the band, this new EP continues on and expands from the first single “Reality.”

Oculus is meant to be listened to in one sitting to absorb its power and meaning with the main theme being about reconciling the individual’s outer persona with their inner self running through the four songs on the EP.  Opener “You” starts acapella and then the piano comes in to make a song that reminds me of a Depeche Mode quiet piece. “Gold Spectrum” is an avant garde jazz piece with wailing and squawking sax and discordant sounds that bring to mind the Contortions. “The Fear Peddler” has a more strait forward sound than the previous song and adds some interesting spaciness in the sound, kind of like drifting in the sky high above the earth. Finishing with “Identidade,” a quiet, yet powerful song that has sweet vocals and a haunting piano that grabs your ears and pulls you into the depth of the song.

A very interesting EP that will have you putting on your headphones to listen to so that you don’t miss one bit of sound that they have produced here. From beauty to quirky and back to beauty all in under fifteen minutes, and fifteen minutes that you will no doubt be listening to again and again.

Ripple Music releases the self-titled album by Heavy Rockers, Freedom Hawk

It's finally here!!  Out of print for years, Ripple Music is proud to unleash the self-titled album by Stoner/Doom legends Freedom Hawk!  Unavailable on vinyl for years, we'll be releasing two editions, the "Red Freedom" Limited Edition milky clear vinyl with Red and Gold splatter, and the World-wide "Midnight Black" Edition.  "Red Freedom" limited to only 80 copies available, so you may want to hurry.  CD digipack also available.

All editions on sale now at and be sure to check for digital and vinyl over at

Wrapped in core metal tones with slight psychedelic edges Freedom Hawk’s driving beat and heavy guitars offer the kind of timeless vocals that gave light to the dawn of the new and heavy revival.

“Freedom Hawk, for instance, is the soundtrack to cold kegs, warm weather, and backyard barbecue. Jams like “On the Other Side” and “My Road” were made for: worshipping at the Super Fuzz altar. James Gang riffs groove it up behind singer T.R. Morton’s excellent Ozzy/Pepper Keenan impression throughout seven songs of bong-loaded bliss.” --- Invisible Oranges
Ripple Music, based in California, is widely regarded as one of the world's leading purveyors of Heavy Psych, Stoner, Doom, and Heavy Rock.   All releases are available world wide through our distributors and the Ripple website.  Check us at

Ripple Music sets December 8th, 2017 as official release date for Switchblade Jesus / Fuzz Evil "Chapter 7: The Second Coming of Heavy" split!

Fuzz Evil:
Formed in 2014, Fuzz Evil is a chug-heavy 3 Piece that tames the fuzziest guitar and bass tones on the planet and wields them to blast a monolithic speaker-ripping fuzzapocaplyse for your ears and soul. Raw and dirty in "Stooges-like" fashion with soaring soulful vocals. Fuzz Evil released their first single, “Glitterbones” on a 7” split with the California trio Chiefs on Battleground records in 2014. In 2016 they followed up the single with a full self-titled debut release on Battleground records.  In the past few year they have gone through a few line-up changes. The current line-up is Orgo Martinez on drums, Wayne Rudell on guitar and vocals, and his brother Joey Rudell on bass and vocals.

Switchblade Jesus:
From the depths of Texas, Switchblade Jesus returns with a heaviness and deep grooves that succeed their previous recordings. Mixing southwestern boogie, desert-worn blues, retro-metal assault and fierce rocking into a sound that screams Texas–at times sanguine and starkly beautiful, at others full of damn sexy groove and assaulting violence can only describe the music of Texan power rocking, fuzzed out stoner blues trio, Switchblade Jesus.

Consisting of Eric Calvert (Vox/Guitar) Jon Elizondo (Drums) and new comer Chris Black (bass) to the fold to create a new chapter in Switchblade Jesus, more Doom and Gloom but no lack of the groove that the Texan's brought in the beginning.

Influenced by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, High on Fire, Melvins, Church of Misery, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, DOWN, Orange Goblin, Clutch, Sleep.

LÅNGFINGER: "Say Jupiter" Video From Gothenburg Power Trio Now Playing At The Obelisk

View / Share LÅNGFINGER's "Say Jupiter" HERE.

Gothenburg power trio LÅNGFINGER is pleased to unveil latest video, "Say Jupiter." The tune comes by way of their Crossyears full-length, released last year via Small Stone.

Directed, produced, and edited in a restaurant kitchen by Anders Bryngel, the clip is currently playing at The Obelisk who issues, "I don't know who in LÅNGFINGER's world owns a restaurant and decided to give the three-piece access to the kitchen for the purposes of the Anders Bryngel-directed clip, but the results are pretty hilarious. As anyone who's ever made one can tell you, a good meal is as much about preparation as it is about the taste of the outcome, and whether they're in the kitchen rocking out or in the front of the house getting the royal treatment from the waitstaff - also played by them - bassist/vocalist Victor Crusner, guitarist/backing vocalist Kalle Lilja and drummer/backing vocalist Jesper Pihl seem to be having a great time putting it altogether. Whatever dinner turns out to be, it's apparently a pretty transcendent experience. Must've had a lot of garlic. God damn, I love garlic."

Watch "Say Jupiter," courtesy of The Obelisk, at THIS LOCATION, where you can also view the band's previously-released "Fox Confessor" video.

The ten-track Crossyears full-length was recorded by Johan Reivén and Olle Björck at Sweden's Welfare Sounds Studio with additional recordings by LÅNGFINGER at Beduin HQ, mixed by Olle Björck, and mastered by Daniel Johansson. Wrote Sea Of Tranquility in a 4/5 review, "If you love albums like Mountain's Climbing!, any of Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, and Grand Funk Railroad's first few, and even The Who's Who's Next, you'll find plenty to sink your teeth into here on Crossyears. Add LÅNGFINGER to the already healthy list of outstanding Swedish retro rockers who are keeping the sounds of the '70s alive."

Stream Crossyears in full HERE where the album is available for purchase.

A truly kick ass power trio is quite possibly the perfect rock formation. If there aren't that many trios around, that's because it's a hard thing to pull off: with just three people having to nail the rhythmic fusion of bass and drums, the wild colors of guitar, and the soul-grabbing focus of the human voice, there can be no passengers aboard. Extraordinary chemistry is essential. Everyone has to be right on it, and locked in. Which is why lots of trios fail, or cop out, and recruit extras.

The members of LÅNGFINGER, hailing from the fertile rock 'n' roll city of Gothenburg, are masters of the art. They've been playing together since they were in their early teens, and their imminent third album is both the thrilling culmination of their collective endeavor, and a rumination on it - on how time has shaped them and brought them to this point. Within its hard-hitting grooves, the interlocking of LÅNGFINGER's three disparate characters - Kalle Lilja, the unflappable, precision axeman; Jesper Pihl, the athletic sticksman battering out physical revenge on his kit; and Victor Crusner, the intense, exploratory spirit, bridging thundering bass and howling exorcism - is a magical proposition.

The Xroadie Files

Primitive Man – Caustic
Ethan Lee McCarthy – Guitars/Vocals, Jonathan Campos – Bass, Joe Linden – Drums

My Will lots of feedback and slow plodding droning riffs with vocals from the mouth of a demon.  Victim more feedback and fuzz with a slightly mid-tempo beat and vocals that sear your soul.  Caustic noise from hades and other places beyond the grave then Commerce starts a slow plodding demonic marching from hell.  Tepid has feedback that hurts the ears and more slow plodding demonic sounds form the underworld.  Ash works its way into your brain with a screech then Sterility pounds you into submission then back to a slow march to hades.  Sugar Hole grinds its way into your very being sucking all of the light out.  The Weight has all the sounds of hell bearing down on you and just devouring your mind then Disfigured grabs your soul and rips it out.  Inevitable is just what it says the end of your sanity.  Absolutes feedback and strange sounds that slowly drive you insane totally.

Profetus – Coronation Of The Black Sun
V Kajansuu – Drums, Eppe Kuismin – Guitar, A Makinen – Guitar/Vocals, S Kajunssu – Keyboards

Skull Of Silence slow and steady Sabbath like rhythms that seems to be coming from a witches coven black mass.  The Eye Of Phosphoros grinds even deeper and darker into the black pit of nothingness.  Coalescence Of Ashen Wings growling grinding deep into your very being and just converting your soul to darkness.  Blood of Saturn worming its way up behind you grabbing your throat and just strangling the life out of you.  Saturine Night hidden deep in your sub conscious is lost emotions. Winter Solstice is just dark deep growling lost in the woods for your life music and vocals.  Blood of Saturn Live completes this horror music fest.

Purple Hill Witch – Celestial Cemetery
Kristian – Guitar/Vocals, Andreas- Bass, Oyvind – Drums

Ghouls In Leather guitar feedback slowly builds then bass comes in then the drums these guys were definitely influences by old Sabbath.  Harbinger of Death heavy riffs pounding drums and bass slow Sabbath stoner rock.  Celestial Cemetary continues the doom stoner festival that will have you just tripping away with some excellent lead guitar.  Around The Universe takes back to the early days of Black Sabbath and just slow emotional tripping music.  Menticide head banging heavy metal that just envelopes you and takes you away to another time and place.  The First Encounter could be on one of the first few Sabbath albums and fit in very well great moody heavy metal with some excellent searing lead guitar.  Burnt Offering ends this doom fest correctly with lots of great playing and emotion.

Shine Bright – More Wild Than The Wind
Spenser Sorensen - , Michael Burton –Guitar  , Zane Waltrous,-Vocals  Jordan Talley - Bass, Tailor Neilson-  Guitar

Grow Up hard core/pop punk vocals and interesting riffs with some excellent drumming.  Jamais Vu is slightly more melodic at the start the goes back and forth from hardcore to pop punk.  Remorse lots of feedback and a grinding riff with gruff yelling vocals.  With A Heavy Heart punches away at you and has some twists and turns.  More Wild Than The Wind has an excellent Green Day style of beat and some interesting vocals.

Norwegian/English dreamy folk duo Tuvaband Release new Single 'Mess'

“Heavenly melody merges with intriguing electronics” (Clash)

“Atmospheric” (Alt Press)

“Melancholic music has never felt so good” (Wonderland)

“We recorded and produced the EP in each of our flats. After recording, we got help from Jonas Kjølstad of At The Loft Records to create the sound to be a mix between our first demos, Lisa Cranner’s music, and Bon Iver’s first album.”

Tuvaband is a Norwegian/English duo made of Tuva Hellum Marschhaüser and Simon Would. Their sound is a melancholic dream world of indie and contemplative lo-fi folk aesthetics influenced by Bon Iver. However you describe their sound, it’s quickly gaining mass appeal. Since their first release one year ago their songs are already pushing 13 million Spotify plays. Their new single, “Mess” is a poetic song gently balancing piano and acoustic guitar with Tuva’s voice. The effect is an immersive listening experience that invokes imagery of a bird guarding an empty nest from predators.

With comparisons to the likes of Laura Marling and The Staves, Tuvaband have regularly been named as one of the best new Scandinavian bands currently looking to dominate the UK’s music scene. And with songs like these, it is easy to see why so many have already fallen for their charm.

About the EP, the band says, “We recorded and produced the EP in each of our flats. After recording, we got help from Jonas Kjølstad of At The Loft Records to create the sound to be a mix between our first demos, Lisa Cranner’s music, and Bon Iver’s first album.” Overall, the EP feels like a beckoning call to return to nature, which also means disconnecting from the electronics that rule our lives. The lyrics are sophisticated and artistic, gracefully narrating stories like a choir of birds in a tranquil forest.

Excalibur – the legendary rock opera is back!
After a thousand years of imprisonment, Merlin – the wizard – finally escapes from Morgana’s spell. Initially intrigued by the beauty of the new world that he returned to, he soon discovers the decay of knightly and sublime virtues, which once had been so bravely defended by King Arthur’s roundtable. An enraged Merlin casts his biggest spell over this world and brings the mighty dragon to life. A epic return of the legendary Celtic rock opera on to German stages, a new chapter in the saga around the sword Excalibur – this is “EXCALIBUR - The Dark Age Of The Dragon”.

Negativehate began in 1995 and have had a lot of ups and downs and especially lineup changes, but the one thing that remained after all of this was the guarantee of music that is challenging and full of emotion and talent. Based in Monroe, NY the band is comprised of Mike Stewart (keys, vocals), Eric Stewart (bass), Chuck Scandura (guitar, vocals), Sergio Sanchez (drums), and Freedom Scheyd (guitar, backing vocals).

The music is a mix of many styles; ambient, prog rock, alternative and post metal, but it all seems to work in their favor creating a sound that will astound and confound in places. The songs are mostly long and do have meandering parts like “The Expansion of the Universe (via magnification of the infinitesimal)” does, but you find yourself just going along and floating during those moments and then when it gets heavy and the growled, almost death metal vocals come in, it fits perfectly. The songs on the album are conceptualized after a story of the same name also written by the band, so it has a definite meaning to it and actually makes for a great listen. This is not an album to throw on and party along to, unless you have really weird parties….and I want to party with you! This is one of those listen to it in one shot to get the full effect of the music, even though you will find tracks that stand out more for you, like I did with “The Expansion of the Universe (via magnification of the infinitesimal)”. The songs do flow from one to the next without a lot of difference between them, but that’s not a complaint, it just makes the whole thing work in ways that most just can’t seem to do.

Give your ears a treat and freak them out a bit with the time changes, vocal variations and other non-traditional sounds on here and let them grow and evolve into something better than just holes where sound goes in, but turn them into something special and lovely, but demented at the same time. A great listen and one that just seems to get better the more I listen to it.
